Samsung have started work on the official software update to Android 7.0 Nougat for the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge devices. This news follows the release of Samsung's beta version of Android 7.0 Nougat for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge devices and is sure to please owners of Samsung's 2015 flagship devices. It is no surprise that Samsung have prioritized the 2016 flagship Galaxy S7 family of smartphones before the former flagship model, but Galaxy S6 customers will likely be receiving the update to Android 7.0 sooner than they may have been expecting because Samsung no longer have to upgrade the Galaxy Note 7 devices after these were removed from sale.
Despite being introduced in March 2015, the Samsung Galaxy S6 family of devices remain very capable today. Both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are based around the Samsung Exynos 7420 chipset, which is the first mobile chipset built on the 14nm process size. This chipset is backed up by 3GB of RAM and uses an AMOLED panel of QHD resolution of 5.1-inch in size, which features curved edges in the Galaxy S6 Edge variant. There's at least 32 GB of onboard storage, but unlike other Galaxy S models, the Galaxy S6 does not include a MicroSD card. Samsung also embedded the battery for the device, which is either 2,550mAh (the Galaxy S6) or 2,600mAh (the Galaxy S6 Edge) in capacity and benefits from fast and wireless charging technologies. There's a 16-megapixel main camera, a 5-megapixel front facing unit, and fingerprint, heart rate and SpO2 sensors in addition to the usual collection. In short, these devices are easily capable of running Android 7.0 Nougat.
Samsung's first beta of the new version of Android is under build number XXS5DPK7 and despite this having been in development for some weeks, there is still some work for Samsung to do before it is complete. It's unlikely that this will be complete before 2017 and in any event, for customers with a carrier-branded device, the software update will need to be approved by the carrier in question. This ROM build version will change as Samsung refine the software. Nevertheless, Android 7.0 Nougat will bring with it a number of improvements to the Galaxy S6 family including Google's amended Android Doze feature, which includes an interim sleep stage for the device designed to improve standby and a number of improvements to the notifications shade. It's not yet clear if Samsung will use a similar user interface with the Galaxy S6 family as we've seen with the Galaxy S7 family, but if they go then several of Android's features are looking very stock-like, which is a good thing.
