Earlier this year, Google launched a standalone keyboard app for iOS devices called Gboard. The idea is that it bakes Google's search functionality into the keyboard itself, thus making it easier for users to search for things without having to leave the app that they are in at the moment.
Oddly enough Google seemed to have only launched it for iOS devices and not Android, but that has since changed. According to reports, it has been noted that in the 6.0 update to Google Keyboard for Android, Google has changed its name to Gboard and has pretty much brought over all of the same functionality for Android devices.
This includes the G button (which can be disabled if you'd rather not have it there) that allows users quick access to search. There is also a pop-out toolbar that gives access to themes, settings, one-handed mode, and more. There is a dedicated number row, support for up to three active languages, the ability to search for emoji, a dedicated GIF button, and Gesture typing has since been renamed to Glide typing.
The update isn't directly available from the Google Play Store at this time of writing, so if you want to get it you'll have to download it Here. Alternatively you can wait as it should probably be officially available soon.
