After launching for the iPhone and Android earlier this year, developer Niantic Labs has now expanded the reach of its augmented reality game Pokémon Go to the Apple Watch as well. The version of the game for Apple's smartwatch should be available to download later today, a few months after it was announced at Apple's September press event.
The Apple Watch version of the game does require the use of an iPhone to download and use it. Niantic Labs says the iOS app is being updated to version 1.21.2 in the App Store to include the Apple Watch support. In addition to being able to see notifications about nearby Pokémon and PokéStops on the watch, this version of the game lets players get notified when any of their eggs hatch. They can also count the distance towards any hatching eggs with the Apple Watch app.
Perhaps the most interesting thing Pokémon Go on the Apple Watch is that you can play it as a kind of fitness session as well. Since playing the game is all about going out to find and catch new creatures, the Apple Watch version can now log any play session as a workout. Gameplay will count towards a user's personal Activity rings on the watch.
If you own an Apple Watch but have not yet played Pokémon Go, will you be trying it out now that is is available for the smartwatch?
