Samsung's iconic home button on their devices has been a point of contention for years. Some customers love it and won't use anything else, while other Android purists hate the idea of physical buttons instead of Google's vision of on-screen keys. 2017 might be the year that Samsung puts the physical home button on the chopping block, if the latest batch of rumors ends up being true.
Bloomberg reports that Samsung is going with an all-screen device with the Galaxy S8, completely eliminating bezels on the sides of the device. That does mean that the home button has to go, which Samsung is apparently ready to do.
Instead of the traditional physical button in between two capacitive keys, Samsung will opt for a virtual home button in the glass of the bottom of the display. That doesn't sound quite like on-screen keys that we're used to in most other Android phones, but it's certainly open for interpretation. There's also some room for questions about where Samsung will implement the fingerprint scanner; we've heard rumors about OEMs using fingerprint sensors embedded in a touch screen, but so far it's all been rumors and patent talk. Nothing official, but Samsung could be the first to breach that wall.
Samsung is targeting a March launch for the Galaxy S8, but after the Note 7's awful recall situation, that release might be delayed by a month or two while Samsung absolutely 100% verifies that the Galaxy S8 won't overheat or explode.
The Galaxy S8 is already shaping up to be one of Samsung's most intriguing devices yet, if these rumors hold up. We'll know in a few months.
