Fortnite Now Runs At 1728p On Xbox One X

Yesterday, Epic Games released the Xbox One X patch for Fortnite.

Fortnite is a free-to-play third-person shooter which features building mechanics and even a PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds-like mode. However, the question many gamers wanted to know was what benefits Microsoft's new console received and how they compared to the PlayStation 4 Pro version.

Many months ago, Epic Games stated that the PlayStation 4 Pro version of Fortnite ran at 1080p with added effects. This was somewhat surprising given the fact that it wasn't even aiming for 1440p on Sony's machine. Some Xbox One X owners were worried that this would be the resolution for their version and it wouldn't be a great experience on 4K displays. Luckily, that's not the case at all.

We reached out to Fortnite's PR team for clarification. Epic confirmed that the PlayStation 4 Pro version still ran at 1080p. They added that the Xbox One X content is rendered at 80% of 4K (3072 by 1728 pixels) and then upsampled to 4K through a high-quality software upsampler. The HUD is rendered in 4K.

While some might have to have seen native 4K, it's still a significant upgrade and the game looks much more sharper than its PlayStation 4 Pro counterpart on 4K displays. The supersampling on 1080p displays also results in a smoother image. The Xbox One X update also bought about the return of the uncapped frame rates option for those who prefer it.

It's great to see developers utilize the 1.8 teraflops advantage the Xbox One X has to push higher resolution and better effects than Sony's console. Hopefully this trend continues in the future.
